The political discussion on tumblr is often so sophisticated, so well informed, so nuanced, so vibrant, and so very unlike most of the discourse I’ve experienced in my day to day life. It’s a little bubble of distant hope for political progress, for resistance to the status quo, for questioning the systemic inequality that pervades modern civilisation. And then you catch the bus and look out the window, minding your own business, talking to no one, and it all grinds on and everyone accepts their lot and puts the telly on. This isn’t intended to be an original thought or anything so absurd. I know I’m not the only one who wishes sometimes that our imagination wasn’t so potent as to lay bare the daily oppression we’re supposed to count our blessings for. But it’s not the disparity between what is and what could and should be that gets to me, it’s the disparity between the dreams we settle for and those we could and should be dreaming.
