“Real friendship is based on saying halfway unacceptable things, normally of a pessimistic nature. Society is dominated by optimism. One has to stay cheerful, when deep down most of us long to express panic and despair. This is a reminder of what books should really be about: to tell us what society is too squeamish to hear, a repository of all the secrets that are far too peculiar or offbeat for the world at large.”
